It was Louis XIV himself who, by deciding to build a port there, sealed the fate of this town that is quite unlike any other. Sète, ‘the singular island’ as Paul Valéry called it, has since forged a powerful and endearing identity, shaped by its canals, Mont Saint-Clair, its boat races, its museums (MIAM, Musée de la Mer, CRAC Paul Valéry Museum, Espace Georges Brassens, MACO), its theatres, its Quartier Haut and its Pointe Courte.
