Balaruc-les-Bains A revitalising peninsula

Balaruc-les-Bains is unlike any other town. Nestled on a peninsula bathed by the Thau lagoon, this multifaceted Mediterranean town reveals its true character to those who take the time to really explore it. As France’s leading spa resort, it attracts thousands of spa-goers every year who come to enjoy the benefits of its thermal waters, renowned since ancient times, but it has many other surprises in store for those who linger. Its Ancient Mediterranean Garden, its promenade running alongside the Thau basin with its panoramic views of Sète, Mèze and Bouzigues, its market and its market halls brimming with local flavours (fresh oysters, Muscat, Picpoul de Pinet, local produce) make it a destination richer than it first appears.

For in Balaruc-les-Bains, a sense of well-being permeates everything, far beyond the thermal baths. On the lagoon, you can sail a catamaran or paddleboard, or set off to explore the oyster beds. In the evening, the terraces come alive and the Mediterranean sky takes on colours you’ll never forget. Certified as a “Territory Committed to Nature”, Balaruc-les-Bains reveals itself in every season within a preserved, green natural setting.

The must-sees in Balaruc-les-Bains

Combining wellness, nature and heritage, Balaruc-les-Bains is brimming with hidden gems. From the thermal baths to the Ancient Mediterranean Garden, via the Piano-Tiroir, this spa town has more than one trick up its sleeve. Here is our selection of must-see attractions that you simply mustn’t miss.

The history of Balaruc-les-Bains

The history of Balaruc-les-Bains is as old as its waters. Thermalism has shaped the life of the town since ancient times, fuelled by thermal water whose underground journey began 100,000 years ago, in the depths of the Causses d’Aumelas and the Gardiole massif. Attracted by the healing properties of its waters, the Phoenicians, Carthaginians and Romans successively settled on the peninsula to build a major city, as evidenced by numerous archaeological finds still visible today, starting with the remains of the Gallo-Roman basilica.

After several centuries of decline, the reputation of Balaruc-les-Bains was revived with great splendour in the 17th and 18th centuries. It was during this period that the Pavillon Sévigné was built, the town’s first spa establishment, which owes its name to the famous marquise. Even today, visitors can dip their feet in a naturally warm thermal bath at 45°C, a living link to this illustrious past.

In the 19th century, visitor numbers continued to rise, and famous figures such as Paganini and Joseph Montgolfier came to Balaruc-les-Bains for treatment. Now ranked as France’s leading spa resort, Balaruc-les-Bains welcomes over 52,000 spa guests a year to a modern facility opened in 2015, whose five pools overlook the Thau lagoon and Mont Saint-Clair. A long history of waters, and it shows no sign of running dry.
