My car-free holiday

Exploring the Thau Archipelago without a car is not only possible, it’s actuallyone of the best ways to experience the area. Compact and well-connected, the Thau Archipelago is naturally suited to a car-free holiday: by train, bus, bike, water bus or carpool. All these ways allow you to slow down and see the lagoon, the villages and the surrounding landscapes in a new light.

Travelling differently means reducing your carbon footprint, but also allowing yourself time for encounters and the little details that the road often makes you forget. Find below all the options for getting here and getting around the area without a car, before setting off to explore our towns and villages.

Visiting the Thau Archipelago without a car

To help you get around our region, Sète Agglopôle Mobilité (SAM) operates 24 bus routes that criss-cross the Thau Archipelago. This is a unique opportunity to explore all our towns at a low cost and with minimal environmental impact.

BlaBlaCar Daily, a 100% free carpooling service, is the ideal way to get around our region and reach any of our 14 local authorities. The principle is simple: once you’ve downloaded the app, simply enter your departure and arrival points, then select your driver.

For the more active among you, make the most of your visit to cycle along no fewer than 50 kilometres of cycle paths, including the famous tour of the Thau Lagoon (we’ll tell you more about that below).

You can travel freely between Sète, Frontignan, Marseillan and Vic/Mireval by train: all these stations are served by the TER.

What can you do around the Thau Archipelago without a car?

  • Hiking in the Thau Archipelago:

Whether through the garrigue, along the lagoon or by the sea, the Thau Archipelago is brimming with walking trails that are ideal for a pleasant break in the countryside. In the shade of the pine forests of the Bois des Aresquiers or the Forêt des Pierres Blanches, at the summit of the Gardiole massif or amongst the vineyards, you can fully enjoy the diversity of our typical and unspoilt landscapes. Find your walk.

A word of advice: In summer, we recommend avoiding the hottest hours of the day (from 12 noon to 4 pm). Check the Prefecture’s website before heading out into the countryside (fire prevention).

  • On horseback, by donkey or on a camel:

Turn your hike into a unique experience with a horse ride on the beach or a donkey or camel ride through the garrigue. Whatever your level, numerous equestrian centres and even a camel centre offer you the chance to discover the riches of our region all year round. All you have to do is choose!

  • Hire a boat, a paddleboard…:

Sailing, boats of all kinds, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking… The Thau lagoon and the Mediterranean Sea offer a playground and exceptional diversity for lovers of water sports and exploration. Whether you’re looking for a leisurely pace or a thrill, you’re sure to find the perfect vessel to get away from it all for a few hours.

  • By minibus:

Yves Bousquet (Buscapade Languedoc) knows his region like the back of his hand and offers to show you the hidden gems via the back roads aboard his minibus.
