Welcome to Loupian

Loupian 2,000 years of history on the shores of the lagoon

Nestled between a lake and the garrigue, this small southern village holds some unexpected treasures. Loupian feels like a journey back in time: every era has left its mark, layered one upon the other, creating a heritage of rare richness for a village of this size. From Gallo-Roman remains to Renaissance architecture, a surprise awaits visitors at every turn: the ramparts of the old castle, Renaissance façades, winegrowers’ houses, the Romanesque Saint-Hippolyte Chapel, the Gothic Sainte-Cécile Church and the remains of the early Christian church. And to top it all off, the Gallo-Roman villa, one of the few examples in France of a villa preserved in situ, where the polychrome mosaics, listed as a Historic Monument, have remained in their original location since the 5th century.

For Loupian does not merely display its history with elegance; it brings it to life. Every summer, the Augustales Roman Days transport visitors back to the era of the Caesars and gladiators, right in the heart of the village, whilst the shellfish-farming farmhouses on the shores of the Thau lagoon remind us that Loupian also lives fully in tune with the rhythm of the basin. Set amidst ancient stone buildings and tranquil waters, it is a village that leaves a lasting impression on those who take the time to stop and explore.

The must-sees in Loupian

With its Gallo-Roman villa, medieval alleyways, Renaissance façades and shellfish farms on the edge of the lagoon, Loupian packs a wealth of history and flavour into just a few square kilometres. A surprise awaits visitors on every street corner, and every visit holds its own share of unexpected discoveries. Here are the must-sees you simply mustn’t miss during your stay.

The history of Loupian

With a history stretching back two millennia, Loupian is a town defined by two traditional industries that give the area its distinctive character: wine-growing and shellfish farming. The Romans understood this better than anyone else. The site of the Gallo-Roman villa, a perfect example of the large villae that dotted the countryside of the Roman Empire, bears witness to a wine-growing estate that operated for several centuries, and excavations have confirmed the harvesting and trade of oysters from the Thau lagoon to Rome. A link between antiquity and the lagoon that says a great deal about the deep-rooted identity of this village.

The Middle Ages, too, have left their mark on the stones of Loupian. The Porte du Caylis and the ramparts traditionally dated to the 14th century, the Gothic Church of Sainte-Cécile, listed as a Historic Monument, the archaeological garden where the remains of an early Christian church were discovered, the Porte de l’Étang and the 17th-century clock tower—all these landmarks tell, street by street, the story of a village shaped over the centuries with remarkable patience and generosity.

Loupian through the ages and the lagoon

In Loupian, the Thau lagoon has been a family affair for generations. Excavations at the Gallo-Roman villa have confirmed that oysters were farmed as far back as antiquity and traded to Rome, proving that the link between the village and its shellfish is far older than is commonly believed. Today, producers welcome visitors to their farmhouses for a gourmet tasting in an authentic setting, with views of the jetties and oyster beds, and the salty sea air whispering of centuries of history. A platter of fresh oysters, a glass of Picpoul de Pinet and the lagoon stretching as far as the eye can see – Loupian certainly knows how to welcome guests.
