Loupian2,000 years of history on the shores of the lagoon
Nestled between a lake and the garrigue, this small southern village holds some unexpected treasures. Loupian feels like a journey back in time: every era has left its mark, layered one upon the other, creating a heritage of rare richness for a village of this size. From Gallo-Roman remains to Renaissance architecture, a surprise awaits visitors at every turn: the ramparts of the old castle, Renaissance façades, winegrowers’ houses, the Romanesque Saint-Hippolyte Chapel, the Gothic Sainte-Cécile Church and the remains of the early Christian church. And to top it all off, the Gallo-Roman villa, one of the few examples in France of a villa preserved in situ, where the polychrome mosaics, listed as a Historic Monument, have remained in their original location since the 5th century.
For Loupian does not merely display its history with elegance; it brings it to life. Every summer, the Augustales Roman Days transport visitors back to the era of the Caesars and gladiators, right in the heart of the village, whilst the shellfish-farming farmhouses on the shores of the Thau lagoon remind us that Loupian also lives fully in tune with the rhythm of the basin. Set amidst ancient stone buildings and tranquil waters, it is a village that leaves a lasting impression on those who take the time to stop and explore.
