Frontignan Set amongst the sea, vineyards and lakes

Frontignan is a town that surprises and enchants. Renowned for its Muscat vineyards since the Middle Ages, this Languedoc town nestles at the foot of the Gardiole massif and 7 kilometres of fine sandy beaches. Its microclimate has allowed it to develop a Muscat with a unique character.
Surrounded by ancient salt marshes and wild ponds, flamingos and grey herons pass through here throughout the seasons. Here, nature and history coexist with a typically Mediterranean generosity.

For Frontignan has many faces, and each is worth a closer look. The medieval town, with its winding streets and ice house tower, tells a story spanning centuries. The old salt marshes, now a sanctuary of biodiversity, and the paths winding through vineyards and scrubland invite you to explore the countryside. The restaurant terraces are brimming with local flavours: mussels from the Thau lagoon, fish of the day, and Muscat as an aperitif. And the beach is perfect for a bike ride or a walk, with the Mediterranean on one side and the reflections of the ponds on the other.

The must-sees in Frontignan

With its golden Muscat grapes, unspoilt beaches, flamingos and medieval ramparts, Frontignan is a town that needs no introduction to win you over. It captivates you naturally, with its contrasting landscapes and that typically Languedocian warmth that invites you to take your time. Here are the must-see attractions you shouldn’t miss.

The history of Frontignan

Some towns have their history etched into their very stones, and Frontignan is one of them. Its winding narrow streets, fragments of ramparts and medieval houses still tell the story of an ancient port that has stood the test of time without ever losing its character.

A fiefdom of the Guilhems of Montpellier, a possession of the Kings of Aragon, then a town of the Kingdom of France in the 14th century, Frontignan has changed hands without ever losing its soul. For at the heart of it all lies Muscat. Since the Middle Ages, this exceptional wine has stood the test of time, captivating illustrious admirers such as Rabelais, Voltaire and Colette, and bringing renown to the town far beyond its borders.

The Languedoc jousting tournaments, recorded on the Étang d’Ingril as early as 1627, the sulphur industry, the life of the White Penitents, and salt production—each era has left its mark on the landscape and in the stones. Frontignan is a town that can be explored as much as it can be read, and which always reveals something new to those who take the time to stop and look.

Frontignan, a land of vineyards and Muscat for centuries

The history of Muscat de Frontignan is inextricably linked with that of the town itself; the two have been intertwined from ancient times to the present day, forming a single shared heritage.

Between the sun-drenched slopes of La Gardiole and the shores of the Thau lagoon, the Frontignan terroir has given rise to one of France’s most famous wines, praised by philosophers, commissioned by presidents, and exported to the four corners of the world in its instantly recognisable twisted bottle: Muscat. Today, this passion lives on through local winegrowers, tastings at the estate, gourmet walks through the vineyards and festive events that bring the Muscat-producing town to life every summer. To immerse yourself in Frontignan’s wine-growing heritage is to taste the very soul of the town.
