Welcome to Poussan

POUSSAN A story set between the Via Domitia and Circulade

Situated on the ancient route of the Via Domitia, halfway between the scrub-covered hills and the shores of the lagoon, Poussan’s old town unfolds in a circular layout around Saint-Pierre Church and the old castle. The 14th-century ramparts, the medieval gates still standing—the Portalet, the Notre-Dame Gate, the Ferrage Gate—and the Renaissance houses on Rue Sadi Carnot tell eight centuries of history as you stroll through the vaulted alleyways. In the centre of the village, the recently restored 1907 market halls have regained their role as a meeting place and now host markets, concerts and cultural events.

Beyond the ancient walls, Poussan opens up its 3,000 hectares of scrubland and vineyards to walkers, overlooking the contrasting landscapes of the wine-growing plain and the nearby Thau lagoon. In the village square, visitors are drawn to linger before the analemmatic sundial, one of the most accurate in France. With its blend of medieval heritage, winemaking expertise and southern charm, Poussan cultivates the art of a tranquil life, deeply rooted in its local area.

Poussan
As beautiful from the air as it is from its characteristic narrow streets, Poussan is a Roman village through which the famous Via Domitia runs. The village is distinguished, however, by another striking feature: its circular layout, a legacy of the Middle Ages when the prosperity brought by wine-growing endowed the streets with a remarkable heritage, including listed buildings such as...

The must-sees in Poussan

Nestled against the scrubland and facing the Thau lagoon, Poussan unfolds its medieval town centre amidst 14th-century ramparts, ancient gates and vaulted alleyways. The old village, centred around Saint-Pierre Church and the castle, retains the understated charm of Languedoc villages, where every stone tells a story. At the recently restored market halls, on the Place du Cadran Solaire or along the paths of the neighbouring hills, you’ll discover a town proud of its heritage and landscapes. Here are the places and experiences to prioritise as you explore Poussan at your own pace.

The history of Poussan

The Poussan area has been continuously inhabited since ancient times, as evidenced by the remains of several Gallo-Roman villas scattered throughout the municipality. The very etymology of the village harks back to this era: Poussan is said to take its name from Porcius, the owner of a Roman estate, and first appears in records in 960 as ‘Porcianus’. An ancient history, shaped by the site’s strategic position on the Via Domitia, between the scrub-covered hills and the shores of the Thau lagoon.

From the 10th century onwards, the village developed around two centres of power: Saint-Pierre Church and a seigneurial tower, the forerunner of the castle. The settlement was arranged in a circle around these two structures, and a first wall was built. In the 14th century, driven by population growth, a second wall was built to encompass the new neighbourhoods. For Poussan, the Middle Ages were a period of prosperity, despite the epidemics, wars and economic crises that were then shaking the whole of Languedoc.

In modern times, the village has expanded beyond its ramparts and spread along the access roads. The construction of the Market Halls in 1907 marked this new phase: designed by the architect Louis Isidore Jarre in the style of the Baltard pavilions, they became the beating heart of the village throughout the 20th century, hosting markets, fairs, balls and gatherings. Renovated between 2022 and 2024, they have regained their role as a hub of community life and now host a new generation of cultural events.
