Description

The Poussan presbytery is an ancient medieval building linked to the Benedictine monks of La Chaise-Dieu, in the Haute-Loire region of France. Its history dates back to the 14th century: the priory is attested to as early as 1333, then in 1343, the abbot of La Chaise-Dieu acquired a house backing onto the fortifications of the château de Poussan, near the cloister of Saint-Pierre church. This complex gradually became the "maison prieurale", then the presbyteral house. The building retains a strong Gothic character, with large rib-vaulted rooms and characteristic bays on the facades. Three-lobed windows, openwork decoration and pointed arches bear witness to this early architecture, rare in the urban fabric of Poussan. From the 16th century onwards, the building appears in tithe leases, demonstrating its enduring role in local religious and economic organization. Today, this monument is of interest above all for its heritage value and for what it tells us about the religious history of Poussan, between the Middle Ages, the Reformation and the modern era. It is a discreet but remarkable stop-off point on a tour of the old town center, close to the Saint-Pierre church and the historic heart of the town.
