10 things to do on rainy days

The sky is clouding over, and the first raindrops are pattering on the rooftops. Don’t panic! The Thau Archipelago really comes into its own when the sun decides to take a break. While the rain creates ripples on the lagoon, relax in the thermal baths of Balaruc-les-Bains, where the water naturally springs forth at 50°C. Step inside Sète’s five museums, all accessible with a single €15 pass. Settle into the plush armchairs of the brand-new Quai des Lumières in Frontignan, which opened in December 2025. Take a dip in the indoor pools of Sète or Gigean.

Stroll through the centuries-old vaults of Valmagne Abbey, this ‘Cathedral of the Vineyards’ where heritage and viticulture come together. Taste golden Muscats and local wines in the cellars dotted across the region. Bad weather becomes an excuse to discover the Thau Archipelago in a different light. Here are 10 ways to turn rain into an opportunity.

A cultural day With the €15 Museum Pass

Sète is home to five remarkable museums that can be explored in the warmth, sheltered from the rain. The Museum Pass, available for €15 from the Tourist Office reception desks, grants you access to the Espace Georges Brassens, which was fully renovated in 2024, the Paul Valéry Museum with its collection of 7,200 works and its panoramic terrace overlooking the lagoon, the Maritime Museum, home to a unique collection of model ships listed as a Historic Monument, the MIAM, where modest art surprises, and the Quartier Haut Chapel dedicated to contemporary art.

Beyond Sète, the Étang de Thau – Louis Higounet Museum in Bouzigues tells the story of shellfish farming through models, aquariums and traditional tools. The collections showcase the fishing and farming techniques that have shaped the region’s identity.

In Loupian, the Gallo-Roman villa reveals polychrome mosaics that have remained in their original location for 2,000 years. These exceptional remains bear witness to the wealth of an aristocratic Roman villa. Two heritage gems to discover, even in the rain.

Recharge your batteries at the thermal baths in Balaruc-les-Bains

As France’s leading spa resort, Balaruc-les-Bains welcomes over 50,000 spa guests every year. The 2026 spa season runs from 23 February to 12 December. The 16,000 m² facility is entirely dedicated to well-being, offering breathtaking views of the Thau lagoon and Mont Saint-Clair.

The spa offers 18-day medical treatment programmes in rheumatology and phlebology, as well as short spa breaks for working professionals and their companions. From a day trip to a 5-day getaway, enjoy the benefits of the naturally warm thermal water at 50°C, rich in bicarbonates and trace elements. A rainy day? The perfect excuse to treat yourself to a relaxing break in the 50°C thermal water.

Afternoon at the cinema

The Thau Archipelago has several cinemas where you can take refuge when the weather turns grey. In Sète, the Comoedia and the Palace screen blockbusters and arthouse films. The Taurus in Mèze also runs ‘Ciné Pitchouns’ for toddlers, specially adapted morning screenings where children can move about and express themselves freely. In Balaruc-les-Bains, the Le Piano-Tiroir cultural centre organises screenings every Sunday afternoon in the autumn and spring.

The Quai des Lumières: Frontignan’s new gem

Frontignan has recently gained a brand-new cinema that is already causing a stir. Le Quai des Lumières has opened its doors in the Les Chais du Canal cultural centre, in the former Botta wine cellars that have been renovated in the heart of the town. This ultra-modern complex replaces the CinéMistral, which closed in April 2025.

The cinema offers four screens seating between 40 and 260 people, equipped with state-of-the-art technology: 360-degree Atmos sound, high-definition projection and 3D capability. Comfort is taken to new heights with reclining seats, chaise longues and even sofas. Disabled access seats are located in the front row.

The programme combines mainstream films and arthouse cinema with a strong focus on arthouse films. Ciné Senior screenings will be available from January 2026 at a price of €2.50. The restaurant La Cave à Nico jouxte les salles is right next to the cinemas, ready to treat your taste buds before or after a good film, whilst you’re nestled in the top-of-the-range comfort of these new screening rooms. An independent bookshop and a documentary film school complete this new cultural hub, which is breathing new life into the town centre. Yet another reason to visit Frontignan on a rainy day!

Take a dip in the indoor swimming pools

Who said water fun has to stop when it rains? Two indoor swimming pools in the Thau Archipelago are open for you to splash about, swim and whizz down a slide, even when the weather turns bad.

The Fonquerne Swimming Pool in Sète

The Fonquerne swimming pool combines sport and fun with its Olympic-sized pool for swimmers, its paddling pool for toddlers, its water slide and its wave pool, which simulates the Mediterranean indoors. Whilst the athletes swim lap after lap, families splash about happily in the play areas. Prices remain affordable, the atmosphere is friendly and the changing rooms are modern. The ideal activity to turn a rainy day into a successful afternoon without breaking the bank.

The Gardiole Aquatic Centre in Gigean

Opened in 2023, the Gardiole Aquatic Centre in Gigean complements the facilities at the Archipel de Thau. This brand-new facility features a 25 x 12.5-metre competition pool, a 150 m² activity pool, a 60 m² children’s play area and stands with 100 seats.

The shallower learning pool is ideal for beginners. A secure water play area delights the little ones. A wide range of activities are on offer: swimming lessons for adults and children, gentle or invigorating aquagym, aquapalmes and aquaphobia sessions. The perfect place to come for a swim on your own or with the family.

Getting lost in the media libraries

A network of modern, well-equipped media libraries covers the Thau Archipelago. Bright reading areas, multimedia services, and zones dedicated to young children: everything is designed with comfort in mind. Novels, comics, magazines, films, music, newspapers and magazines, and documentaries. The shelves are brimming with treasures.

During the school holidays, there’s a wealth of activities on offer. Creative workshops, storytelling sessions, meetings with authors, film screenings. The media libraries become lively hubs where young and old alike can find something to enjoy. A haven of peace when the rain comes calling.

An introduction to the art of wine

The winegrowers of the Thau Archipelago welcome you with open arms, even on a grey day. The estates offer tastings and cellar tours, allowing you to discover the region’s rich wine heritage.

The Muscats of Frontignan, Vic-la-Gardiole and Mireval are among the oldest natural sweet wines in France. Whether sweet or dry, these golden Muscats exude aromas of candied fruit, honey and flowers. The producers recount the history of these AOC wines and explain the process of fortification with alcohol, which preserves the natural sugars.

But the Thau Archipelago is not limited to Muscat. The estates of Mèze, Villeveyrac and the surrounding area produce powerful, sun-drenched reds, fresh rosés perfect for an aperitif, and mineral whites that perfectly complement the lagoon’s oysters and shellfish. AOC Languedoc, Grès de Montpellier, IGP: the appellations reflect the diversity of the terroirs between sea and garrigue.

The winemakers share their passion, explaining the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Viognier grape varieties. You taste, you compare, you learn. And often, you leave with a few bottles in the boot. A delightful way to enjoy a rainy day in the Thau Archipelago.

Be pampered at the spa

In Balaruc-les-Bains, the La Magie des Mains spa at the thermal baths offers treatments and massages in a setting dedicated to well-being. Please note that the O’balia spa is currently closed. Only the La Magie des Mains area remains open for visitors to enjoy the benefits of the thermal water; it has been temporarily relocated to the upper floor of the thermal baths whilst works are underway.

The treatments harness the properties of thermal water, recognised since ancient times. Massages, body wraps, facials: the treatments make the most of the soothing and remineralising properties of this unique water. A rainy day becomes the perfect excuse to treat yourself to a wellness break.

At Maison Tarbouriech in Marseillan, the high-end treatments celebrate the Thau oyster. Pearl-infused facials, massages with marine oils, wellness rituals: oyster farming meets cosmetics to create oyster therapy. Enjoy the spa or a meal at the estate’s restaurant after your treatment – the perfect combination for a bespoke moment of relaxation.

Let’s treat ourselves to a comforting snack

When the temperature drops and the sky turns grey, there’s nothing like a tasty treat to cheer you up! Our favourite spots? Liloo Bistrot and Café Lulu in Sète, as well as Café des Fleurs in Mèze. These cosy, welcoming spots offer a wide selection of hot drinks and sweet treats, to be enjoyed whilst you sit back and watch the rain fall.
