The Thau Archipelago, a sustainable destination

A destination committed to sustainable tourism

A number of initiatives have been put in place to ensure that environmental, social and economic considerations are firmly embedded in the Tourist Office’s operations and in the destination’s tourism offering, through concrete actions:

  • Continuing the internal CSR approach
  • Strengthening the role of local liaison in sustainable development
  • Raising awareness among visitors and residents of eco-friendly practices
  • Continuing to develop soft mobility and the cycling plan
  • Promoting intermodal transport from the region’s main access points
  • Develop and promote a ‘car-free’ tourism offering
  • Improve traffic and parking conditions to create a calmer environment for mobility

A daily commitment to CSR

A working group dedicated to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has been set up to support teams in the ecological transition. Workshops on climate change, initiatives promoting eco-friendly practices, and discussions on mobility and quality of life at work are organised on a regular basis.

Internal surveys on quality of life at work and commuting are also conducted to improve daily practices and reduce the environmental impact of travel.

A shop committed to responsible consumption

L’Archipel de Thau follows a responsible purchasing policy, prioritising local, sustainable products that support the circular, social and solidarity economy. Every product sold in the shop is assessed against sustainable development criteria.

To date, 25% of the products in the Sète shop are identified as eco-friendly, and this assessment process continues to develop.

Raising awareness and supporting local stakeholders

Awareness-raising initiatives on eco-friendly practices are regularly carried out with staff: waste sorting, organic waste collection, reducing water and energy consumption, educational displays, etc.

The destination’s website also features a section dedicated to the ‘committed destination’, accessible to both the general public and professionals, to promote local initiatives and best practices in sustainable tourism.

Supporting accommodation providers and preserving natural areas

A survey was conducted among tourist accommodation providers (hotels and self-catering holiday lets) to identify eco-friendly best practices already in place and to explore ways to support and promote committed establishments.

Throughout the year, initiatives to raise awareness of biodiversity and the preservation of natural areas are organised in collaboration with local partners, notably through discovery walks and educational activities.
