Description

The “Notre Dame des Eaux” (Lady of the Seas) chapel dates from the 12th century. Romanesque in style, it was built from blocks of shell limestone, as the sea and lagoon were the only purveyors of this immediately usable mineral resource during this distant era. A monument to the distinctive art produced by the bishops of Maguelone, its consecration in honour of Saint Marie appears to support the theory that the virtues of the beneficial waters from this area were revered. Listed on the French supplementary historical monuments register in October 1989 and bought by the Town in 1994. A private property until it was bought by the Town and converted, it then spent time as a cinema, an ironmongery and a florist. It has suffered from the ravages of time.
