Description

In Montbazin, the 18th century was marked by urban and economic development. The de Lavergne family built the Château des Colonnades during this period. It was the last château in Montbazin. The de Lavergne family gave up their dominant geographical position to settle beyond the settlements, in a totally open space. The magnificent colonnade was built at a later date, opening onto a vast park that certainly extended down to the river. All that remains today is one of the first terraces. The château was bought by the town council in 1897 to be used as a school for girls, with the boys being housed in the present-day town hall. Around 1982-83, the colonnades were used as post office premises. In 1990, the deteriorated columns, which were in danger of collapsing, were restored. Some of the stones, those in good condition, were cleaned and reused, resulting in the colonnades as we know them today.
