The Saint-Louis Lighthouse, a monument steeped in history
Built around 1680, destroyed in 1944 by German mines, and rebuilt in 1948, the Saint-Louis Lighthouse is one of Sète’s most iconic landmarks. At its base are two lines by the Sète poet Paul Valéry, taken from “The Birth of Venus.” In 1771, this lighthouse became the first in France to feature a glass lantern. Today, its red light continues to mark the entrance to the channel.
A 360° view from the top
At the top of the 126 steps, a 360° view awaits you: the commercial port, the marina, the old town, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Thau Lagoon are revealed in all their splendor.
Reservations Required
To visit the Saint-Louis Lighthouse during Heritage Days, advance reservations are required.
