A cultural flagship in the Bassin de Thau and an architectural gem, the Théâtre Molière was inaugurated in Sète in 1904. Designed by the municipal architect, Antoine Gour (for whom this was his one and only theatre), it has been in continuous use ever since, except during the First World War and… the last two years of essential renovation work.
In 1983, the Municipal Theatre was renamed the Théâtre Molière. Since 2003, it has been designated as inter-municipal heritage under the responsibility of Sète Agglopole Méditerranée.
Under an agreement, the Scène Nationale de Sète et du Bassin de Thau is responsible for promoting and producing performing arts.

The Théâtre Molière becamea national theatre in 1993.
The ‘Scène Nationale’ designation was created by the Ministry of Culture in 1984. The remit of a ‘Scène Nationale’ is:
➡️ presenting contemporary performances,
➡️ regional development,
➡️ fostering new creative works.
Throughout the season, the Théâtre Molière hosts performances in theatre, dance and music – both classical and contemporary – as well as opera, shows for young audiences and contemporary circus. The National Theatre is strengthening its regional presence by taking many of its productions and initiatives to the Bassin de Thau area.
