A horse ride through the Aresquiers woods

Just outside Montpellier, amidst the Aleppo pines, lulled by the song of the cicadas, here you are galloping with the wind in your hair on a genuine Camargue horse… Has this introduction given you some ideas for your next holiday in the Thau Archipelago? Head to the riding centre along the Route des Aresquiers in Vic-la-Gardiole to enjoy this unique experience in the Bois des Aresquiers.

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced rider, come and explore the Vic-la-Gardiole and Ingril lagoons, and even the old salt marshes of Frontignan, on horseback or on a pony for the little ones. But first, a bit of history about the place you’re about to discover!

Aresquiers Wood

Tucked away between the lagoons of Vic-la-Gardiole and Ingril, on the edge of the sea and the salt marshes, lies the Bois des Aresquiers, a 179-hectare oasis for plant and animal life.

A succession of Aleppo pines, steppes and salt marshes dotted with glasswort, this landscape, reminiscent of a primeval forest, is a paradise for walkers, but above all for birdwatchers. A true birdwatcher’s paradise, you can spot (with or without binoculars): flamingos, warblers, owls, cuckoos, grey herons, little egrets, storks, ducks…

Enchanted by the song of the cicadas and the scent of pine resin, you can explore the Bois des Aresquiers on foot, by bike or opt for a unique experience on horseback!

The horse ride

As well as offering you the chance to immerse yourself in the Aresquiers woods, along the Ingril pond and on to the Frontignan salt marshes, Marion and Patrick will be delighted to help you (re)discover the joys of horse riding, whether you’re a beginner or an experienced rider. First, book the ride of your choice:

  • 1 hour exploring the Bois des Aresquiers and Ingril Pond
  • 2 hours, including a ride through the old Frontignan salt marshes
  • 30 mins for the little ones (pony ride)

Get to know the Camargue horses and ponies at the riding centre and treat yourself to a grooming session with a few strokes. You’ll then need to put on your helmet (hairnet provided) and get on your horse! Your group (maximum 12 horses) will then venture out into the moors, salt marshes and glasswort that make up part of the Bois des Aresquiers. Along the way, enjoy the stunning views of the Gardiole massif and, with a bit of luck, watch the birds take flight.

The more experienced riders can even try trotting and galloping, whilst beginners can enjoy the gentle pace of their horse.

Tip: On your return from the ride, you’ll have the chance to enjoy a meal on site before continuing your holiday in the Thau Archipelago.
