Located along Avenue Victor Hugo, the Théâtre Molière is a well-known venue among the residents of Sète. Here, you’ll find theatre, but that’s not all! With nearly forty shows on offer throughout the year, you’ll be spoilt for choice: music, dance, opera… There are even shows for children.
As a bit of history, we owe this French-style theatre to the architect Antoine Gour, who opened it in 1904. Since then, this listed building (2003) has continued to earn glorious epithets: “the prettiest French-style theatre in the whole of the south of France”, “a true jewel among French-style theatres”… It now belongs to the Scènes Nationales network.
Just a stone’s throw away, at 29 Grande Rue Haute, is a small, old-fashioned and more intimate theatre (seating around 50) that welcomes visitors from September/October to May/June. Four evenings a week, adults can enjoy a one-man show, a jazz concert, flamenco… whilst children can have a laugh at a puppet show, a play or a musical story…
Also, if you fancy taking classes or doing theatre courses, the Théâtre de Poche can turn into a school! Whatever your age, take part in a theatre workshop.
One of Sète’s more intimate venues is La Passerelle. Located in the Île de Thau district, this former performance venue, built in the 1990s, is now run by the MJC La Passerelle and offers a programme that is 70% free of charge. As well as the regular sports activities on offer, you can enjoy shows, plays, film screenings, concerts and themed evenings.

The Théâtre de la Mer is a rather unusual theatre. Before becoming Sète’s unmissable summer venue, it was, in the 17th century, a fortification designed to protect the population and the port of Sète from attacks by land and sea, before being converted into barracks and then a hospital.
Now known as the Théâtre Jean Vilar, in honour of the famous actor and director from Sète known, amongst other things, for having founded the Avignon Festival, it hosts all the major festivals. Its unique feature is the breathtaking view it offers of the Mediterranean Sea and Mont Saint-Clair, as it is a theatre open to the sea, as its name suggests.

In Balaruc-les-Bains, this cultural centre, which focuses on a multidisciplinary programme, offers theatre performances, café-théâtre, music, dance and film from late September to June, as well as a programme aimed at young audiences. Don’t miss a visit to the Piano Tiroir gallery, which regularly hosts exhibitions.
From June to September, the Théâtre de Verdure extends the cultural season in Balaruc-les-Bains. Tucked away in Sévigné Park, not far from the tourist information office, it welcomes you outdoors for a film, a concert, a show or even a bingo session (organised by the Balaruc-les-Bains festival committee).
