The former salt pans of Frontignan

Fancy getting up close to Mother Nature during your stay in Frontignan, getting away from the tourist crowds, or simply observing the flora and fauna typical of the Thau Archipelago? Then head to the old salt marshes of Frontignan!

Updated on 15 June 2026

A little history

Shaped until 1968 by the salt-making industry in the area, this succession of freshwater and saltwater wetlands still bears traces of three centuries of exploitation: canals, old salt pans…

Now a favourite haunt for flora and fauna, it is also here that you can enjoy a breathtaking view of around a hundred species of birds, including flamingos, black-winged stilts, ducks and terns… They come here to overwinter, breed or simply stop off during their migration.

It is, in fact, thanks to this rich flora and fauna that this vast 230-hectare area for walking and contemplation, nestled between the hills of the Gardiole massif to the north and theIngril Lake, which is connected to the Mediterranean Sea to the south, has been designated a Natura 2000 site.

Tip: It’s best to bring a good pair of binoculars to fully appreciate the spectacle.

The ‘Ponds and Salt Marshes’ trail

To make sure you don’t miss a thing at this Conservatoire du Littoral site, we invite you to follow the signposted trail (a 15.5 km loop) around the ponds and salt marshes, either on foot or by bike.

Amidst the glasswort and sea-lamb’s-ears that grow in summer on the parched ground, the reed beds that can reach up to three metres in height, or through the heathland, dry grasslands and pine forests, let your gaze wander over the landscapes of the lagoon, the old salt marshes and the Bois des Aresquiers.

Completely flat, this route, known as the “Ponds and Salt Marshes”, offers unobstructed views of Ingril Pond and even allows you, thanks to a wooden walkway, to cross the lagoon for a truly immersive experience.

Nature walks

Would you prefer to be guided, or would you like to (re)discover the old salt marshes of Frontignan in a unique way? Why not treat yourself to a nature walk? Among the many options available throughout the year, we recommend:

  • On the White Gold Trail, a tour that will allow you to delve into Frontignan’s salt-making past.
  • The Salt Trails, ideal for a scenic loop walk to the source of the Bois des Aresquiers.
  • Salt in the Stars, a unique experience that will see you follow in the footsteps of the old salt workers, but at night.
