A romantic weekend in Balaruc-les-Bains

Nestled between the Thau peninsula and lagoon… Between a thermal spa and an ancient Mediterranean garden… Balaruc-les-Bains sometimes feels like the end of the world, but above all it is a romantic town with a wealth of activities designed for couples. If you need to reconnect with your partner or simply treat them to a lovely break, head to Balaruc-les-Bains to watch the sun set from the beach, to treat your taste buds in the town’s traditional restaurants, to get away from it all on a cruise along the Canal du Midi, or simply to enjoy a lovely evening at the Circus Casino and the Le Piano Tiroir cultural centre.

ACTIVITIES

 The O’Balia interlude

If you’re coming to Balaruc-les-Bains for a romantic weekend away, it’s surely to relax – and you’ve made the right choice! As France’s leading spa resort, the town is also home to the Mediterranean’s first thermal spa: O’Balia (reopening in 2026).

So, even if you’re not here for a spa treatment or a spa break, you can still enjoy the benefits of the thermal water during a massage and extend the experience with a body and/or facial treatment at the “ La parenthèse O’Balia ” located in the heart of the Balaruc-les-Bains thermal baths.

The Georges Brassens and Laurent Spinosi Promenade

After this relaxing interlude, we invite you to take a stroll along the Georges Brassens and Laurent Spinosi promenade. Stretching for around two kilometres, it offers a gentle re-connection with the bustling life of Balaruc-les-Bains, as it also runs alongside the Thau lagoon and its breathtaking scenery: Mont Saint-Clair in Sète; Mèze, the Mediterranean’s leading small-scale fishing port; Mont Saint-Loup, at the foot of which the Greek town of Agde stands; Bouzigues, the cradle of shellfish farming; and Marseillan, made famous by its Noilly Prat cellars.

It’s also the ideal route for touring the Balaruc-les-Bains peninsula, catching a glimpse of the town’s beaches and, in the distance, the shellfish farming areas; and, at the end of the route, see the source of the Vise, a funnel 100 metres in diameter; or take a few romantic selfies with Georges Brassens and Laurent Spinosi thanks to the trompe l’oeil artwork along this walk.

Tip: Why not surprise your loved one by treating them to an ice cream along the way, thanks to the many restaurants and ice-cream parlours dotted all along the route.

Cruise on the Canal du Midi with Les Bateaux du Soleil

Fancy a day-long cruise up the Canal du Midi? That’s exactly what Les bateaux du Soleil invites you to experience. Whether you’d like to explore the Trois Yeux bridge; catch a glimpse of the Libron’s engineering works, which are unique in the world; sail as far as the Portiragnes locks; learn more about the Ariège department or the town of Béziers; or cross the Orb canal bridge… Anything is possible!

Your cruise will, of course, be accompanied by commentary from your captain on the history of the Canal du Midi and its various structures, as well as the flora and fauna that surround it. And why not make this moment even more unforgettable with a meal to complement your visits?

Please note: The departure point is Agde. Shuttle buses are available to allow you to set off for the day from Balaruc-les-Bains.

 The Ancient Mediterranean Garden

If you’d like to prolong these moments of tranquillity in the heart of nature, we invite you to visit the Ancient Mediterranean Garden. No sooner will you have stepped through the gates of this garden, dedicated to the study of Mediterranean plant species and their uses, than you will be transported back to the heart of Antiquity.

Designed as a true invitation to travel and meditation, the “JAM” features no fewer than seven themed areas centred on agriculture, horticulture, the sacred, medicine, magic, cuisine and cosmetics. Amidst the pergolas, arbours, fountains and small amphitheatre, let your gaze wander through this setting that blends nature with elements of ancient architecture.

Tip: Guided tours are available from the staff at the Jardin Antique Méditerranéen to learn more about its history.

RESTAURANTS

 Le Saint-Clair

Why not make your weekend even more romantic by booking a table at Saint Clair? As its name suggests, this fine-dining restaurant offers breathtaking views of Mont Saint-Clair in Sète and the Thau lagoon. The menu stays true to the theme, as the chef serves up refined cuisine made from local produce, including platters of shellfish caught just a few metres away, to share or enjoy on your own.

On the menu: warm goat’s cheese aumônière; escalivade in olive oil; organic free-range chicken breast in a rosemary crust; hake fillet dusted with mint; praline mousse served with choux pastry and strawberry sorbet; lemon shortbread with meringue…

 The Aroma

If you’re looking to treat your taste buds to a romantic evening in a relaxed, laid-back atmosphere, head toL’Arôme. Jean Jack and Léone will be delighted to welcome you and show you around their Art Deco interior and art gallery before seating you on the terrace or in the courtyard.

The menu? It’s dictated by the seasons and the daily arrival of a wide variety of fresh fish, always with a focus on respecting the ingredients. For dessert, what could be better than indulging in a generous homemade pastry and artisanal ice cream, all accompanied by an AOC coffee or a fine tea.

Note: This Maître Restaurateur’s cellar features local wines and AOCs, carefully selected from winegrowers.

 The Open Sea

Still along the Thau lagoon, you’ll find another must-visit restaurant in Balaruc-les-Bains for its Mediterranean cuisine: Le Grand Large. Expect to be swept away by its refined and surprising dishes, featuring on the daily specials board, the Discovery menu and the Grand Large menu.

On the menu: natural Mediterranean oysters, ‘house-made’ Roche fish soup, beef carpaccio, Mediterranean sea bass fillet, roasted veal tenderloin, grilled John Dory with black pirate sauce, fruit desserts, “royal chocolate” dome, pineapple carpaccio…

 Sunset at La Guinguette

For a simpler meal by the water’s edge, head to Sophie and Laurent’s La Guinguette. Whether on the terrace or in the conservatory, the view of the sunset over the Thau lagoon is breathtaking and unforgettable, accompanied by a platter of cold meats, tapas, seafood pasta, guinguette-style aioli, or fish or meat cooked over a wood fire. Not to mention a glass of wine from local producers to go with it.

 The Drawer Piano

Fancy a night out at the theatre? Let the Le Piano Tiroir cultural centre surprise you with its high-quality programme of events: theatre, music, dance, painting, cinema (screenings of recent cinema releases on Sundays) and an art gallery hosting exhibitions by local artists.

 Circus Casino

Would you rather enjoy a night of pure fun with your partner? Circus Casino is the place for you. With table games (European roulette, blackjack, rampo), slot machines and events (black-bulles, World Tour tournament…), you’ll be spoilt for choice. You can even extend your evening at the casino bar or start it off with a romantic dinner at Le Prana restaurant, which serves local and seasonal produce (booking required).

Tip: Don’t forget your ID and make sure you’re dressed appropriately so you don’t cut your evening at the casino short.
