A morning at the market halls in Sète

A stroll through the market halls of Sète – one of the simple pleasures I treat myself to during my stay in the Thau archipelago…

Updated on 15 June 2026

All the flavours of the South

The covered market halls in Sète are a paradise for food lovers. The stalls are brimming with mouth-watering local produce and specialities: sun-kissed fruit and vegetables, distinctive wines and cheeses, shellfish, fish and crustaceans, not to mention the famous tielles and zézettes de Sète. When you’re as curious and food-loving as I am, you don’t know where to start!

After enjoying a coffee with some sweet treats, I begin my sensory journey. I taste a delicious tapenade that will be perfect for an aperitif with friends, take advice from a fishmonger to find out which wine will pair best with the sea bream I’ve just bought, choose a few vine peaches for dessert, before giving in to the temptation of a tielle and a mussel turnover…

An exceptional atmosphere

What I love most about this place is the atmosphere: the noise, the laughter, and the shopkeepers’ accents ringing in my ears… a complete change of scene! The best bit, apart from the little chats with the producers, is the chance to sample Mediterranean oysters with a glass of local white wine, sitting right in the middle of all this cheerful hubbub. On each of my visits, I treat myself to this little pleasure, a moment of relaxation that makes my holiday all the more enjoyable…
