Visiting a friend who’s a shellfish farmer, deckchairs, sunshine, lazing about, chilling out, relaxation, oysters, tasting

A wine tasting at a farmhouse or dinner at a beach hut?

In the Thau Archipelago, there are two ways to dine by the water’s edge: one, overlooking the lagoon whilst enjoying a selection of shellfish; the other, facing the sea, in a beach hut. I’ve heard great things about both of these local experiences, and I wonder which one I’ll prefer…

Act 1 Shellfish tasting overlooking the lagoon

I’m here! I’ve finally arrived between Bouzigues and Loupian, and the view is breathtaking: the sparkling blue water and oyster beds stretching as far as the eye can see… I can even make out Sète and its famous Mont Saint-Clair in the distance.

Producers are offering tastingsofMediterraneanmussels and oysters – there’s no shortage of them here! I opt for a producer with a lilting accent, whose production site has been tastefully arranged for tasting. I’m given a warm welcome and I know straight away that I’m in the right place.

As for me, I like my oysters plain! I choose fresh oysters, caught that very morning by my dear host. Plump, melt-in-the-mouth and with subtle nutty flavours, the Bouzigues oyster won me over straight away. I pair them with a Muscat typical of the Archipelago, with fruity notes.

Next time I visit, I’ll be keen to try the mussels from the Thau lagoon, which the producer has raved about so much.

Act 2 Dinner in a beach hut

I spent the whole day with my eyes glued to the water! That deep blue has definitely been the highlight of my stay here…

This time, facing the sea, I settle down with my feet in the sand in a chic yet relaxed atmosphere, immersed in natural surroundings; I’ve chosen a beach hut that caught my eye.

Fresh produce, archipelago specialities and seafood – the menu is packed, and I’m finding it hard to choose… I start with a fruity, refreshing cocktail, which I pair with cuttlefish à la plancha, a local speciality, on the recommendation of the hostess.

Lulled by the sound of the waves, but also by the music, I get up to go and dance… That’s the beach hut atmosphere for you: friendliness, simplicity and sharing.

A shellfish farm or a beach hut? The verdict!

After these delicious experiences, it’s hard to say. A seafood restaurant or a beach hut? It’s impossible to choose at the moment, and all I can hope for is that this area has more surprises in store for me as my stay continues!
